Listeriosis: a rare but severe disease

In mild cases, listeriosis presents symptoms typical of gastroenteritis (fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea). However, more severe forms can lead to septicemia, meningitis, brain abscesses, or spontaneous miscarriages. These complications can be life-threatening.

Transmission and routes of contamination

Listeria monocytogenes is widespread in the environment, as it is present in soil, water, and animal reservoirs. It can contaminate various food products, including:

  • Raw and frozen vegetables

Contamination can occur during manufacturing processes, especially when foods are handled or sliced after cooking but before packaging. Cooking above 65°C destroys Listeria monocytogenes, but recontamination is possible without proper hygiene practices.
