Hardness testing for water treatment and system health monitoring

Laboratories of Eurofins Water Hygiene Testing are able to assess the chemical composition of water for hardness in a wide variety of applications and sample matrix types.

Why water hardness matters

Water hardness reflects the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium salts; it significantly affects performance; efficiency and lifespan of water systems. High hardness promotes scale formation and poor heat transfer driving up energy costs.  Over‑softened water can increase corrosion risk in some systems. Routine hardness testing underpins effective control in closed heating and cooling circuits, potable supplies, and industrial process systems.

Supporting system efficiency; treatment control & compliance

Hardness monitoring supports tasks from softener performance verification to commissioning checks and ongoing maintenance. Results inform dosing strategies for inhibitors and other treatments helping prevent scale‑related flow restriction, elevated fuel usage, and unplanned outages.

Testing and methods

Eurofins water hygiene testing provides calcium, magnesium and total hardness analysis for potable water closed systems, softeners and environmental samples. Testing is performed using titrimetric and instrumental methods with robust QA/QC. Typical turnaround is two to three working days depending on matrix and testing scope.

Testing is delivered through UKAS-accredited laboratories; accreditation is matrix dependent. Regulatory alignment; methods developed to reflect current UK and EU standards and industry best practice. Where required, approved subcontractors, including Eurofins European competence centre partners, are engaged to extend scope.
