PFAS testing

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), which include PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that can accumulate in water, soil, animals, and the human body. Due to their health and environmental impact, these contaminants have been a focus of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for several years. Eurofins Food & Feed Testing offers accredited analysis for a broad range of PFAS substances.

Key services

  • Accredited analysis for nearly 40 PFAS substances, such as PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS, in fish, shellfish, fish liver, meat and egg
  • Specialist packages for PFAS4 (EU), PFAS22 (DK), PFAS50 (UK)
  • Customised packages, tailored for large monitoring programmes or specific risk assessments

Additional services

  • PFAS testing in drinking water, including PFAS4 and DWD20 (EU), PFAS21 (SE), PFAS22 (DK), and PFAS48 (UK)
  • PFAS testing in food packaging, including:
    • Targeted PFAS analysis; individual compounds, excluding polymeric PFAS
    • Sum of PFAS; targeted analysis excluding polymeric PFAS
    • Total fluorine content; includes polymeric PFAS, useful for broad screening
  • Customised testing packages for product development and compliance programmes

Legal framework and guidelines*

European Union (EU) and Northern Ireland (NI)

Great Britain (GB)

GB follows a combination of retained EU law and national guidance*

  • There are no binding PFAS limits in domestic legislation yet; instead, the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) PFAS and Forever Chemicals current guidance recommends a guideline of 0.1 µg/L sum of 48 PFAS in drinking water and expects monitoring and risk-based reporting
  • Eurofins supports compliance with the science behind DWI guidelines and anticipates upcoming standards urging early readiness

* Regulatory information is provided for general guidance only and may not reflect the most recent regulatory changes. This is particularly relevant to the PFAS regulatory landscape which is rapidly evolving. Always consult official sources for up‑to‑date legislation.
