From 14 June 2026, stricter requirements have been in force in the European Union for the origin indication on honey labels. Since this date, general wordings for honey blends, such as ‘blend of honeys from EU/non-EU countries’, are no longer permitted.
Producers must state the countries of origin on the label in descending order, including the corresponding percentage composition. A tolerance margin of 5% applies. For packaging containing less than 30 grams of honey, the full country name may be replaced by the two-letter ISO country code.
Using microscopic pollen analysis and other methods, we can accurately verify the origin and composition of honey. This provides insight into what is actually present in the honey and helps producers demonstrably comply with the new EU requirements.
