Health risk posed by Campylobacter

Campylobacter is one of the most common causes of foodborne illness. In Switzerland, campylobacteriosis has been the most frequently reported bacterial foodborne infection for many years. Each year, around 7,000 to 8,000 cases are reported to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). In 2025, 8,654 laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded. As many of those affected do not seek medical treatment, the actual number of cases is likely to be significantly higher.

The illness typically presents with diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever and general malaise. Around 15 per cent of patients are hospitalised. In rare cases, serious complications such as Guillain–Barré syndrome or reactive arthritis may occur.

Main source of contamination

Raw or undercooked poultry meat is considered the main source of Campylobacter infection. The bacteria are commonly found in the intestines of healthy animals and can be transferred to meat products during processing. Other sources of infection include:

  • Raw milk and products made from it
  • Contaminated drinking or bathing water
  • Cross-contamination during food preparation
  • Direct contact with infected domestic, farm or wild animals

Studies and surveillance programmes in Switzerland show that poultry meat is the most significant source of human Campylobacter infections.
