Water activity testing for cannabis products

Water activity measures the availability of free water in a product and is a key indicator of microbial growth potential and product stability. Unlike moisture content, water activity provides direct insight into microbial risk.

Key services

Our laboratory provides comprehensive moisture analysis by distinguishing between "Total Water Content" and "Water Activity." These metrics are essential for determining the chemical stability, microbial risk, and physical integrity of cannabis products.

Pharmacopeial compliance: USP <921>, <922>, <1112> & EP <2.5.12>, <2.9.39>

Water determination (total water content)

This analysis quantifies the total amount of water present in a sample, which is a critical factor for dry-weight potency calculations and regulatory compliance.

  • Methodology: Analysis performed according to USP <921> and EP <2.5.12> (Water Determination).
  • Technique: Utilising Karl Fischer Titrimetric Determination, we provide high-precision measurements for samples where moisture content must be strictly controlled.
  • Purpose: Unlike Loss on Drying (LOD), which measures all volatile matter, Karl Fischer is specific to water molecules, making it the pharmaceutical standard for oils, resins, and finished products.

Water activity

Water activity measures the "free" or "available" water in a product that can support the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and moulds.

  • Methodology: Analysis performed according to USP <922> (Water Activity), USP <1112> (Application of Water Activity), and EP <2.9.39> (Water Activity).
  • Purpose: This is a key tool in a Quality by Design (QbD) framework. It is used to:
    • Predict and prevent microbial proliferation.
    • Optimise the drying and curing process for cannabis flower.
    • Ensure the stability of shelf-life for edibles and topicals
