New EU packaging rules bring PFAS restrictions into focus

The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Regulation (EU) 2025/40  now applies across the European Union, introducing significant new requirements for packaging sustainability and safety. A key measure that came into effect on 12 August 2026 is the restriction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food-contact packaging, helping to reduce consumer exposure to these persistent "forever chemicals".

PFAS have historically been used in certain food packaging materials to provide resistance to grease and moisture. Under the new regulation, food contact packaging containing PFAS above specified thresholds can no longer be placed on the EU market.

As regulatory scrutiny of PFAS continues to increase across food, water and packaging sectors, manufacturers, retailers and packaging suppliers should review their compliance strategies and assess potential PFAS risks within their packaging supply chains.

Eurofins Food Testing UK provides a range of PFAS testing solutions for food contact packaging, including targeted PFAS analysis and Total Fluorine (TF) and Total Organic Fluorine (TOF) testing. Our services help businesses demonstrate due diligence and prepare for evolving regulatory requirements.
