New nickel legislation: relevant to your product?

Since 1 July 2025, statutory maximum levels apply for nickel in food. A major step towards better consumer protection, but also a challenge for producers who use plant-based raw materials.

Voor wie is de nieuwe wetgeving relevant?

Risk products include, for example, grains, pulses, nuts, vegetables, fruit, cocoa (chocolate), seaweed and baby food. For these categories, the European Commission has set clear limits in Regulation (EU) 2024/198, with a mandatory reporting obligation if you exceed the standard.

Why these new rules?

  • Nickel can be harmful, especially for young children and people with an allergy.
  • Nickel occurs everywhere, both naturally and through human activity.
  • The EFSA concluded again in 2020 that both chronic and acute exposure to nickel carry risks.

The impact for producers and retailers is significant. Does your product fall under the new standard? Then now is the time to act. To measure is to know – and if you're (just) above the standard, it's essential to take control measures or work with an expert to look at the source.
