Your choice of analysis method can determine whether you can substantiate a nutrition claim. For fibre in particular, the analysis method has a major influence on the outcome. By using the right method, it's sometimes possible to demonstrate a higher dietary fibre content in a product, which can then also be stated on the label.
This makes fibre analysis relevant not only for the mandatory nutrition declaration, but also for claims such as ‘high in fibre’ or ‘source of fibre’, and for calculating the Nutri-Score, which is partly based on fibre content.
Analysing dietary fibre is complex and very much depends on the analysis method chosen. The Eurofins Expertise Centre for Complex Carbohydrates and Chemistry (CCC) is based at Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands in Heerenveen: an expertise centre where the latest analysis methods are developed and applied. Food manufacturers and raw material suppliers can turn to this centre for high-quality fibre analyses, tailored advice, and support with labelling and claims.
One of the driving forces behind this expertise centre is Ioannis (Yannis) Vrasidas, PhD, Carbohydrates Innovation Manager. With years of experience in food analysis and a sharp eye for scientific developments, he works daily on innovation and knowledge-sharing within Eurofins' international network. What exactly does he focus on?
“I follow the latest scientific insights in my field closely,” says Yannis. “That way we can help clients respond faster to trends, while also seizing new opportunities for our clients.”
In addition to guiding fibre analyses and developing new methods, Yannis provides training courses and seminars for colleagues and clients. He also regularly represents Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands at trade fairs and international events.
“The combination of scientific depth, client contact and international collaboration makes my work varied, challenging and inspiring,” says Yannis.
Yannis speaks eight languages fluently, a special skill that often allows him to help colleagues and clients in their own native language. This comes in particularly handy when providing guidance on carbohydrates and fibre.
Eurofins Food Testing Netherlands offers various analysis methods for dietary fibre, depending on the type of product and the desired application (such as complying with legislation, substantiating nutrition claims, or Nutri-Score optimisation). Yannis and our other experts actively brainstorm with you about which method best suits your product and objective. Do you have a question about your product?
