ASAD - Asociación Solidaria Andaluza de Desarrollo

The Asociación Solidaria Andaluza de Desarrollo (ASAD) is an NGO working for the promotion and respect of Human Rights throughout the world, as a matter of global justice. It promotes development projects that empower communities and strengthen civil society through education, training and communication on development.

In Guinea Bissau, the rate of households facing food insecurity is 21.5%. In 2020/2021, with the Eurofins Foundation’s support, ASAD built three solar pump irrigation systems in community orchards on the island of Uno, Bijagos archipelago in Guinea Bissau. The island has a total population of 3,858 people: this water system directly benefits a total of 201 female farmers, and another 1,400 people indirectly.

This improvement to the irrigation system has allowed women to extract water from the wells more quickly and with less physical effort, rather than manually extracting from a depth of 5-7 meters. The resulting increase in water extraction boosts the production of horticultural products such as tomatoes, peppers, and aubergines, fundamental parts of local diet. This project has also generated a substantial added value in the commercialisation of such products, guaranteeing a more continuous and stable supply to meet the demands of traders.
