Kids In Nutrition

Kids In Nutrition (KIN) empowers the younger generation to lead healthy and sustainable lives through nutrition and food sustainability education. Given that research suggests children develop eating habits by age nine, KIN teaches kids about optimal nutrition and sustainability practices during their formative years. Early food literacy education has a tremendous downstream effect on carrying healthy and sustainable dietary habits into adulthood, thus building a foundation for chronic disease prevention, health equity, and environmental impact awareness.

Since 2014, KIN has taught over 5,600 elementary students across 260 classrooms and engaged nearly 1,000 university students, focusing on low-income communities. Underprivileged children are disproportionately at risk of developing chronic diseases due to educational and health disparities within marginalised communities. KIN Chapters examine school enrollment data on socioeconomically disadvantaged students and The Free or Reduced Lunch Program to serve schools most in need. KIN’s target audiences are primarily underserved Latinx and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of colour) elementary school students and families. 

 

In 2022/2023, the Eurofins Foundation renewed its support to Kids in Nutrition, helping KIN achieve remarkable success:

  • Teaching 942 elementary students across 50 classrooms,
  • Engaging 223 volunteers spanning eight university chapters,
  • Distributing 221 recipe bags and food access resources,
  • Strengthening its family engagement pillar by improving its KINcentive program comprising of challenges, newsletters, worksheets, and online resources.
