Embrace Global

Project country: Democratic republic of Congo
Embrace Global is a US-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to reducing neonatal mortality by providing life-saving warmth to vulnerable newborns. Since 2007, Embrace has distributed portable, reusable incubators to over 25 countries, helping save more than one million babies. Designed for low-resource, conflict, and emergency settings, these incubators require only occasional electricity, are easy to clean, and are rugged enough for disaster zones. Embrace works through partnerships with Ministries of Health, global NGOs, and community health systems, ensuring equitable access for families affected by poverty, displacement, and crisis.
In 2025-2026, the Eurofins Foundation is supporting the project “Embrace DRC Incubator Deployment.”
Newborn hypothermia is a leading cause of infant mortality, particularly for mothers living in conflict zones and poverty where access to healthcare is extremely limited. Healthcare facilities may be damaged or overwhelmed, and power shortages make traditional incubators unreliable. Funding will contribute to the production of 300 portable incubators, supporting Embrace’s work in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where conflict is occurring and neonatal resources are limited. Embrace’s incubators provide an innovative and portable alternative that is not reliant on stable electricity and can be used in hospitals, ambulances, refugee camps, and even bomb shelters – anywhere newborns need immediate care.
In partnership with International Medical Corps (IMC), Embrace Global will equip 30 referral hospitals and clinics with CE-marked incubators, manufactured in ISO 13485-certified facilities to meet rigorous European medical device standards. Each incubator uses a phase change material (PCM) that, when heated, maintains a consistent 98°F (37°C) for up to six hours without requiring continuous electricity. The devices are clinically validated, durable, reusable hundreds of times, easy to clean, and intuitive for frontline workers. Embrace will provide remote training in local languages on neonatal thermoregulation and device use, with ongoing technical support, refresher sessions, and performance monitoring where feasible. This rollout builds on a successful pilot in Kirumba and reflects our commitment to health equity and innovation
Eurofins’ grant will also contribute to 16 training sessions for the healthcare workers of the 30 facilities to know how to use the portable incubators and learn life-saving best practices.
