Jacaranada Health

Jacaranda Health is a non-profit organisation that delivers low-cost, sustainable solutions to improve the quality of maternal and new-born care in government hospitals. In Kenya, 90% of facility-based maternal deaths are preventable. 55% of these deaths occur because healthcare providers lack the necessary skills to handle emergencies, and 33% result when mothers delay seeking care.

In 2020/2021, the Eurofins Foundation supported the expansion of Jacaranda's Nurse Mentorship programme, which trains and mentors frontline nurses to improve the quality of care to mothers during delivery. Over the last year, the nurse obstetric mentorship programme was deployed in over 200 large hospitals across 18 counties in Kenya. Thanks to this programme, over 300 trained government mentors are now supporting more than 4,000 frontline nurses.

Approximately 200,000 births occurred in those facilities. Jacaranda Health estimates that the mentorship programme has influenced care for 400,000 mothers and babies: preliminary reporting data shows a 20% reduction in postpartum haemorrhage and a 20% reduction in infant mortality.
