What is HMB?

HMB is a metabolite of the amino acid leucine. Leucine is first metabolized to α-keto-isocaproate (KIC), and approximately 5% of KIC is then converted to HMB1. Research suggests that HMB supports muscle protein synthesis through the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway and helps reduce muscle protein degradation through the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway2,3. Because only limited amounts of HMB are produced through typical dietary protein intake, supplementation is commonly used to increase HMB availability. HMB supplements are available as HMB free acid and, more commonly, as calcium HMB. A daily serving of 3 grams of calcium HMB has been supported by data from early studies4.
