A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is a type of electron microscope and one of the most widely used analytical tools for producing highly magnified images. Using a focused beam of electrons, an SEM generates various signals at the surface of a solid sample, providing detailed information about its surface morphology, chemical composition, crystalline structure, and material orientation. This advanced microscope offers a long depth of field and produces high-resolution, three-dimensional images of the surface and near-surface regions of the sample.
This training programme is designed to equip trainees with the knowledge and practical skills required to operate and maintain a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) effectively for industrial testing and analysis. The course content is comprehensive, covering both theoretical concepts and practical guidance, with extensive hands-on learning in the laboratory. Trainees will gain practical experience in sample preparation, SEM operation, image acquisition and interpretation, instrument maintenance, and basic troubleshooting. By the end of the programme, trainees will be well equipped to perform SEM analysis safely and effectively in an industrial laboratory environment.
Theoretical session on introduction to SEM, its basic principles, and its applications in various fields, including practical examples.
Theoretical session on the capabilities of SEM, sample preparation method, image contrast formation (SE, BSE, etc.), and a practical session on SEM alignment, operation techniques and specimen preparation.
Theoretical and practical sessions on image interpretation for different types of samples.
Exposure to saving, recording, calibrating and printing the images, along with precautions to be taken while working on SEM.
Sample preparation and extraction techniques, with an interactive demonstration. Maintaining the SEM instrument and troubleshooting any problems.
Problem-solving session followed by a written test.
Minimum eligibility required: Diploma or a graduate degree in science, or currently pursuing a qualification in a related field.
The training is beneficial in developing knowledge and practical skills in material testing. It provides participants with hands-on experience in testing different materials and helps them understand their properties, applications, and testing methods.
