What is bitumen?

Bitumen is a highly viscous, sticky material obtained as a by-product of petroleum refining. It is composed mainly of condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and is soluble in carbon disulfide. National standards in India define bitumen as a black or dark brown non-crystalline soil or viscous material with strong adhesive properties, derived either naturally or through refinery processes from crude oil.
