OEB 2 hours refers to the Onbestendige Eiwit Balans (OEB) of a feed ingredient or ration and indicates how much protein and energy become available in the rumen and whether these two components are in balance.
A positive OEB means that relatively more protein is available in the rumen compared with energy.
A negative OEB indicates a shortage of rumen protein.
OEB 2 hours shows the OEB value during the first two hours after feed intake. This fraction therefore provides insight into the rate at which protein becomes available in the ration.
A high OEB 2 hours indicates that a protein surplus occurs during the first two hours after feeding. This can be caused by a high proportion of soluble protein, for example in grass silage or lucerne.
