PFAS are man-made chemicals which have been in use since the 1950’s and are currently used by almost every industry sector globally.
PFAS can be hazardous to human health because they do not break down naturally and persist in nature, hence their nickname ‘forever chemicals’. PFAS can build up in water, soil, and crops grown in contaminated soil, and can become airborne in household dust and industry emissions. Research conducted as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) programme shows that PFAS bioaccumulate over time, but if the exposure source is identified and eliminated, levels decline.
