Inorganic acids are corrosive low pH substances used in industry for chemical reactions as well as for cleaning purposes. They are used in a broad range of industries including petrochemical, agriculture , and metal finishing. Commonly used inorganic acids are sulfuric acids, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, perchloric acid, boric acid. Exposure to small concentrations in the workplace can cause respiratory tract and mucous membranes, eyes, and skin irritation, while larger concentrations can cause destruction of the same. Hundreds of OSHA mandated analytical methods are available through the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods (NMAM) includes several analytical methods to determine acid exposures in workplace air. Method NIOSH7903 can be employed for determination of inorganic acids exposure. Check with your local Eurofins Built Environment Testing (EBET) laboratory for availability and the latest iteration of these approved methods.
