Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome

Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome is caused by a pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene variant and characterised by increased risk for female and male breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, melanoma and other cancers.

The two most common mutations of the MTHFR gene are C677T and A1298C, with up to 50% of the general population carrying at least one of these variants. In some instances, individuals with two copies of the mutation (homozygous) experience less efficient enzyme function, leading to a build-up of homocysteine in the blood, a risk of heart disease (blood clots or stroke), and pregnancy complications.
