Published initiative on European electromagnetic compatibility rules

 

Between 23rd January and 21st February 2020, The European commission carried out a public consultation in relation to the European Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive. The aim of this consultation is to evaluate whether the directive is still applicable.

As a reminder, below is a summary of the standards and legislation that will come into effect within the next six months and will require application:

  • Standards:

    • On 14th March 2020, the standards EN 61960:2011 will be replaced by the new European standard EN 61960-3:2017 Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes - Secondary lithium cells and batteries for portable applications - Part 3: Prismatic and cylindrical lithium secondary cells, and batteries made from them
  • Legislation:

    Manufacturers and importers should carefully consider these upcoming dates of application and confirm that their products will comply with the following restrictions:

    • Europe: Regulation (EU) 2019/1782 - Ecodesign requirements for external power supplies

      Brief description:

      This Regulation establishes Ecodesign requirements for placement on market or putting external power supplies into service

      It will apply from the 1st April 2020

The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection is proposing to adopt the most recent version of standard, CNS 691 "Fluorescent lamps (for general lighting service)," published on 15 August 2019, as the inspection standard for hot cathode fluorescent lamps. To phase out mercury-added products in line with the goals of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, this revised version requires the content of mercury to be no more than 4mg. The requirements for restriction of hazardous substances and the applicable conformity assessment procedures remain unchanged
