CL:AIRE is a UK organisation supporting the understanding, management and remediation of contaminated land and environmental risks. Through its PFAS information hub, CL:AIRE brings together technical guidance, research and practical resources to help regulators, consultants and site owners investigate and manage PFAS contamination. In July 2026, CL:AIRE published a suite of 13 PFAS Site Profiles, providing sector-specific insights into PFAS sources, uses and environmental release pathways.
The PFAS Site Profiles provide an overview of PFAS use, likely substances, release mechanisms and environmental impacts across 11 industrial sectors, together with dedicated profiles for Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) and Fire Suppression Systems. While many of the highest-risk sites have AFFF-related contamination in common, particularly airfields, military facilities and fire-training grounds, the profiles clearly demonstrate that PFAS contamination extends far beyond AFFF sources. The guide highlights distinctive PFAS signatures and pathways associated with landfills, metal manufacturing and finishing, and wastewater treatment works. Other important sectors include textiles, upholstery, leather and carpet manufacturing, where PFAS have historically been used for stain and water repellency, as well as paper and cardboard manufacturing, where PFAS have been used in grease-resistant coatings and food-contact materials. Collectively, the site profiles provide a framework for understanding how PFAS occurrence and composition can vary significantly between different industries and environmental settings.
Eurofins offers a comprehensive portfolio of PFAS analytical services available, supporting site investigations, regulatory compliance and environmental forensics. Analytical capabilities cover both targeted methods for regulatory PFAS lists and broader screening approaches, including TOP assay, to identify a wider spectrum of known and unknown PFAS compounds. Services are available across a wide range of matrices including groundwater, surface water, drinking water, soil, sediment, sludge, AFFF, air, waste, food, feed and biota, enabling a tailored analytical strategy for PFAS-related investigations.
