Understanding the Low Voltage Directive (LVD)

The Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU mandates that electrical equipment placed on the market must provide a high level of protection for people, domestic animals, and property. This directive applies to products designed for use with a voltage rating of 50-1000V AC and 75-1500V DC at their input or output.

Products with multiple voltage ratings fall under LVD if the highest rating is within these limits. Even battery-operated equipment below these thresholds can be included if it can operate via a mains power supply unit (e.g., laptops).

If equipment contains a radio device, it falls under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), but its safety aspects still align with LVD principles without the lower voltage limit.

Products exceeding 1000V AC or 1500V DC are generally outside the LVD's scope, though accompanying chargers for battery-operated equipment might still be covered. Annex II of the LVD lists specific exclusions, such as equipment for explosive atmospheres (covered by ATEX), radiology, medical purposes, electricity meters, domestic plugs/sockets, and specialised equipment for ships, aircraft, or railways adhering to international safety provisions.
