In the pharmaceutical industry, ensuring the stability and safety of drug products throughout their lifecycle is critical. Photostability refers to the stability of a drug product when exposed to light. Drug substances or products can degrade when subjected to light, which can affect their efficacy and safety. ICH guidelines (Q1B) give guidance for testing photostability by simulating light exposure conditions during production, storage, and distribution.

Transport stress studies evaluate how external conditions like vibrations, shocks, and temperature fluctuations during transportation can impact drug products. Improper handling during shipment can compromise the drug’s quality, leading to degradation or physical changes.

These tests mimic real-world conditions to ensure the product remains intact from production to delivery. In-use studies are designed to assess how drug products behave once opened and used by patients. This includes evaluating how long a drug remains stable after the initial opening of its container and determining its shelf life under in-use conditions. It should be noted that in-use studies help set guidelines for storage and usage to ensure that the drug remains effective and safe throughout its intended use. These studies are essential for maintaining drug quality and ensuring patient safety throughout the drug’s lifecycle, from manufacturing to patient administration
