Healthy soils support a range of functions, from crop production and nutrient cycling to water regulation, carbon storage and biological activity.

But soil health also needs to be understood at field level. Soil type, nutrient status, organic matter, physical condition and biological activity can all provide information about the condition of agricultural soil and where management may need attention.

A recent article from Eurofins Agro Testing UK looks at this relationship from an English perspective, following the publication of the Indicators of Soil Health for England, 2026 release. It explores the difference between national soil-health indicators and field-level measurements, and how soil analysis can support practical soil and crop management decisions.
