PFASsive is a diffusion-based equilibrium passive sampler that was developed and validated for PFAS in porewater, groundwater, storm water and surface water. Upon retrieval, the water from the sampler is treated like a water sample; the PFAS can be concentrated and measured using traditional United States Environmental Protection Agency laboratory methods without the additional extraction steps required for sorbents. The results are presented as concentrations in nanograms per liter (ng/L).
Because the accumulation of PFAS into the sampler is based on how the molecules diffuse into the sampler, the included reverse tracer allows the extent of equilibrium to be determined during deployment and used to estimate the freely dissolved equilibrium concentration in the environment. The freely dissolved equilibrium concentration has been shown to relate better to bioavailability, toxicity, and risk assessment models than concentrations measured from conventional grab samples.PFASsive™ can be used to provide critical data for fate and risk assessments, toxicity identification and remediation design and/or monitoring that is more representative than conventional grab samples as it quantifies contaminants only in the dissolved form.
PFASsive™ is offered in partnership with SiREM as an end-to-end service where the samplers are provided along with optional support for diverless deployment, analytical chemistry (by Eurofins) and modelling of the final data to deliver the equilibrium concentration of PFAS. Overall, this sampler is easy to use, field evaluated and can be adapted to the growing list of PFAS chemicals of concern as both the regulations and analytical techniques evolve.
