Who must comply with the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM 2004)?

 

The BMW Convention came into force on the 8th September 2017. All vessels were required to comply with D-2 standards as of the 8th September 2024.

Who must comply with the Convention?

  • All ships designed of constructure to carry ballast water
  • New vessels (built on or after 8 September 2017) must meet D-2 standards
  • All ships built before 8th September 2017 must meet D-2 standards as of their first IOPP renewal survey, occurring anytime since 9th September 2019 

Exceptions:

  • Vessels which operate in the waters of one Party to the Convention
  • Vessels which have exemptions (refer to Convention Article 3, Regulations A-3 and A-4)

Type approvals 

Nearly all Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS) receive Type Approval. The conditions of ambient ballast water vary significantly around the world and as a result, there is no single BWMS that fits every purpose. Most systems are designed to meet the majority of general conditions.
