How to obtain viable samples

Precise nutrient management can only occur with a quality representative sample.

 Tips for sampling

  • Sample the correct part of the plant at the correct growth stage
  • Always wear gloves to avoid contamination
  • Regular tests build better profiles
  • Be consistent in obtaining your representative sample; sample plants of similar vigour, variety, size and age
  • Sample early in the week; if storing samples over the weekend, dry or refrigerate
  • Use stainless steel cutting implements

Avoid the following

  • Spoiled, diseased, insect damaged, senescing or dead plant tissue
  • Unusual areas in the paddock which can include poorly drained soils, sheep camps, headlands etc
  • Areas of crops/pastures in the immediate vicinity of trees
  • Do not sample plants under moisture stress and avoid waterlogging
  • Plants growing in dung or urine patches
  • Sampling soon after soil or foliar fertiliser application
  • Contamination from dust, soil, sprays, fertilisers and your hands (always wear gloves to avoid contamination)
  • Avoid touching fenceposts or any other object that may contaminate your sample
  • Use Eurofins Agro Testing's paper bags not plastic bags

How to take the sample

  • Review your required tests. If guidance is required please contact Eurofins Agro Testing or your local agronomist
  • Determine an appropriate sampling plan
  • Ensure a representative sample is obtained
  • When troubleshooting, take samples from good and poor growth areas for comparison
  • Ensure the correct part of the plant is sampled
  • Collect the desired amount of leaves or petioles (generally aim to fill 1/2 to 2/3 of Eurofins Agro Testing's plant tissue bags)
