The introduction of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) has transformed environmental investigations. It has fundamentally changed what questions can be addressed and what insights can be gained from analytical data.

To maximise the value of HRMS, Eurofins works closely with clients on a project basis. An initial meeting helps define the project's objectives and key questions. This ensures that the data are interpreted in the right context and deliver the greatest possible value for decision-making.

Term Explanation
Target screening

We know what we are looking for.

We analyze the sample together with a certified reference material. This allows us to identify and quantify compounds with high accuracy.

We do not find anything that we are not looking for.

Suspekt screening

We have a list of compounds that we want to look for. We do not have certified reference materials but base our search on sources such as international databases. This allows us to screen for a very large number of compounds, including compounds for which no reference materials exist.

We do not find anything that we are not looking for.

Non-target screening

We do not know what we are looking for.

Based on our knowledge of the sample, we prioritize compounds of interest and try to identify them..

Example of applications/previous projects

Broad screening of a substance group in a specific matrix

Expand_img

Screening a wastewater sample for pharmaceuticals. A suspect screening package may include around 2,000 pharmaceutical compounds.

Studying changes over time

Expand_img

For example, investigating releases from the widely discussed mink burial sites. Groundwater samples are analyzed before burial and during and after the burial period.

Investigating the cause of production problems

Expand_img

Sudden operational problems at a wastewater treatment plant. Samples are compared with samples collected during periods without problems.

Retrospective analysis of historical data

Expand_img

Investigating whether a pesticide found in groundwater today was also present in earlier samples.

Verifying theoretical assessments of a substance's environmental fate

Expand_img

Investigating possible degradation products formed when a pesticide is applied to a test field.

Early warning monitoring of rivers and lakes

Expand_img

Continuous monitoring using automated, regular sampling. An alert is triggered when results deviate from normal conditions.

Identifying the cause of environmental impacts

Expand_img

Identifying the source or sources of a substance that caused a sudden fish kill in a river.

Supporting environmental due diligence during company acquisitions

Expand_img

Non-target screening with the option of retrospective analysis if questions about environmental liability arise later.

Monitoring treatment processes

Expand_img

Regular analyses focused on the breakdown of parent compounds and the formation of degradation products.

Designing a monitoring program for industrial discharges

Expand_img

Initial screening of wastewater from a new facility or production process can form the basis for the long-term sampling and analysis program.
