Reference Materials include a broad selection of certified reference materials used to improve and ensure the quality of environmental laboratory analyzes for environmental measurements.

Certified reference materials result in better analysis results than self-produced control samples. The purpose of controlling the performance of environmental chemical analyzes is to ensure that the analysis results are in accordance with a true value.

A safe way to perform chemical analysis checks is by using certified reference material. This is a sample produced under controlled conditions and where the content has been measured by a number of selected and qualified laboratories. This gives a high degree of certainty that the value of the control sample is as close to the true value as possible. To ensure that a measurement result meets the expected quality, the laboratory that makes the measurement will use certified reference materials.

It is important that a reference sample is as closely as possible to the unknown sample. This means that it should have the same concentration range and sample composition as the unknown sample. However, when it comes to environmental samples it can be difficult to achieve this in practice, as the natural concentrations and sample composition can vary greatly. Therefore it is important to have many reference materials to choose from and to have reference materials that can be added to the unknown samples, to check whether the substance being added can be found.​
