Celebrating 30 Years of dedication and excellence — an interview with Principal Technologist Neil Radford

Recently, our UK office marked a truly special occasion: the 30th work anniversary of Principal Technologist Neil Radford. Neil’s dedication, passion, and expertise have had a lasting impact on the team, and his journey serves as an inspiration to many. We sat down with Neil to reflect on his career path at Eurofins Assurance, his experiences as a Principal Technologist, and his insights on staying engaged, overcoming challenges, and building a positive workplace culture.
Q: What is the job scope as the Principal Technologist in Eurofins?
Neil: My role as Principal Technologist is really about safeguarding the quality, legality, and safety of food — something that touches all of our lives. Day to day, that means planning and conducting audits, writing detailed reports, and constantly learning to keep up with the latest developments. In the early days, I was also involved with our sales teams, but over time my focus shifted more to supporting producers and mentoring new colleagues. It’s a role that’s taken me to all sorts of places and introduced me to people from every corner of the food industry — which is one of the things I love about it.
Q: How did you start with us? Can you tell us about your journey with our organisation?
Neil: In the 1990s, I sought a local and interesting role due to family responsibilities after my first manufacturing job ended. I came across a job advert in the newspaper for a Food Technologist role. A few interviews later, I was in. Over the years, I moved through the ranks: from Food Technologist to Principal Food Technologist and then to Principal Technologist.
Q: What motivated you to stay for such a long time?
Neil: Every audit presents a new challenge, a new environment, and a new opportunity to meet people. It’s a lifetime of learning. I also appreciate the travel and the lifelong learning that comes with the role. There’s always something new to discover, and that’s what keeps me going.
Q: What do you consider to be your greatest achievement during your time here?
Neil: I’ve always believed in using new tools, sharing knowledge generously, and helping others develop their skills. Seeing colleagues grow and knowing I’ve played a small part in that — that’s what I’m most proud of.
Q: What are some of the most memorable experiences you've had while working here?
Neil: There have been several memorable moments during my time here. One that stands out is a fire engine unexpectedly arriving at the start of a food safety audit. Another was driving over a glacier in Iceland to reach a remote site. I also recall having to conduct an audit in airline-branded clothing after my checked bag went missing - definitely not the usual dress code, but a good reminder to stay adaptable.
Q: How have you seen our organisation change over the years, and how have those changes impacted your role?
Neil: The transformation has been remarkable. We’ve gone from being a small local business to being part of a global leader. With that growth came new systems, improvements in work-life balance, and new challenges.
Q: Can you describe a particularly challenging situation you faced in your role and how you overcame it?
Neil: On 16th March 2020 at 08:30, I arrived at a pickle factory for an unannounced audit, needing to enter within 30 minutes. After checking in at security, I found reception unattended and had to contact a manager, but no one was available. I called my office for guidance and requested to be provided with protective clothing along with direct access to the factory, as time was running short. I coordinated a solution, ultimately cancelling my hotel stay. Just a week later, a national lockdown due to Covid-19 was announced. I was so glad that the unannounced audit was completed successfully before businesses were forced to stop, despite the rough beginning!
Q: How do you stay motivated and engaged in your work after many years in the same position?
Neil: For me, it’s all about people and mindset. I’m lucky to work with a team that embraces change and is always open to new experiences. Staying connected with colleagues, and continuous learning keep me motivated. Curiosity is key.
Q: What skills or qualities do you think are essential for success in your role?
Neil: Integrity. Above all else. In food safety auditing, trust is the foundation, and your reputation depends on consistently making the right decisions.
Capturing a moment of Iceland’s stunning landscapes during an international assignment.
On location in Argentina while supporting global food safety and quality standards.
Taking in the view from the Great Wall of China between audits.
Experiencing the natural beauty of South Africa.
Q: What suggestions do you have for improving the workplace culture or environment?
Neil: Knowledge exchange could really strengthen the team. Increase structured face-to-face team meetings where teammates can talk and share learnings and ideas.
Q: How do you keep up with industry trends and changes, and how do you apply that knowledge to your work?
Neil: The industry doesn’t stand still, and neither can we. I’m an active member of the Institute of Food Science and Technology, I subscribe to Food Standards Agency alerts, follow industry media, and I’m quite active on LinkedIn.
Q: What are your future career aspirations, and how do you see your experience here helping you achieve those goals?
Neil: With my official retirement less than two years away, I remain focused on food safety auditing, maintaining income-generating activities, and continuing to support the team.
Q: If you could change one thing about your job or the organisation, what would it be and why?
Neil: That’s a tough one — I keep changing my mind! But honestly, I think the most important thing is to stay open-minded. The market, the industry, and the organisation are always evolving. Rather than wishing for one specific change, I prefer to stay adaptable and ready for whatever comes next.
Neil’s journey highlights how staying curious, embracing change, and nurturing team connections can lead to a fulfilling and impactful career. We thank Neil for his outstanding contributions and look forward to the new milestones and stories.
