European standardization for biostimulants on the right track
After 18 months of intense work, all 33 Technical Specifications (TS) were approved by the European Technical Committee CEN/TC 455 "Plant biostimulants" in December 2021!
By April 2022, these normative documents will enable manufacturers to market EU biostimulants that meet the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 upon its entry into force on July 16, 2022.
There has been substantial work done on biostimulation claims. The large number of claims, and the need to guarantee the same efficacy levels across the products placed on the market, has made it necessary to define, first of all, the general principles to be followed to justify these claims. In a second step, the rules for demonstrating the four claims of Regulation 2019/1009 (nutrient efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stresses, and the availability of nutrients confined to the soil and rhizosphere) were established.
A second stage begins with the development of the 33 harmonized European standards (hEN) whose publication is scheduled for April 2024.
