The European Committee have endorsed the updated guidance on the assessment of exposure of operators, workers, residents and bystanders in risk assessment of plant protection products (EFSA Journal 2022;20(1):7032) with the implementation date of 1 January 2023.

This new guidance should also be followed for product authorization’s in Northern Ireland, whereas for submission in Great Britain, the non-dietary exposure should be assessed in accordance with the previous version of the guidance (EFSA Journal 2014;12(10):3874).

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) propose to implement the 2022 EFSA Exposure guidance in Great Britain and will be seeking stakeholders’ views on that proposal, which will include a possible timeline for use in Great Britain.

This new guidance introduces the use of the online calculator

This updated calculator includes:

Operator Greenhouse (greenhouse AOEM (BfR, 2015; BfR 2020) including data; only additional “considerations” for bystanders and residents.
Updated Mixing/Loading data (outdoors, combined with indoors)
Updated TC [g. new for bolting sugar beet and harvesting peaches – based on new data]
Calculated re-entry interval
Updated human default values: Inhalation rates and default surface area of body parts
Average air concentrations: use of saturated vapour concentration
Updated protection factors for PPE
Combined risk assessment to multiple actives substances
Revised crop grouping and an extension of general re-entry activities

Additionally, a detailed report can be generated in a word format.
