Mechanical and physical testing for Toys

Physical and mechanical hazards in toys and childcare products are among the significant concerns for regulators and market surveillance authorities due to the risks these represent to the children.

To eliminate these risks, the presence of cords, or generation or presence existence of small parts, sharp points or sharp edges, or poor performance of the toys during use, have to be assessed.

Some of the toy safety standards included in our service scope are:

  • EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC
    • EN 71-1 for mechanical and physical properties of toys
    • EN 71-8 for activity toys for domestic use
  • ASTM F963-17 & 16 CFR 1500.50~53
  • ISO 8124-1 for mechanical and physical properties of toys
  • Canada Toys Regulations SOR/ 2011-17
  • AS/ NZS 8124.1: 2019
  • CPSIA
  • China GB Standards and requirements on physical and mechanical properties of general and specific toys

Products not meeting the requirements established in the different global regulations and toy standards are in danger of being recalled and, more importantly, they will be putting children at risk.

Apart from toy safety, the performance of toys should be examined properly so that they fit users’ expectations well. We offer a wide range of physical performance testing of toys, including:

  • Impact test
  • Drop test
  • Torque test
  • Tip-over test (for large and bulk toys)
  • Tension test
  • Compression test
  • Flexure test

Benefits

The Eurofins Toys and Hardlines network of laboratories can help you to:

  • Assess the physical and mechanical safety of your toys and children products
  • Evaluate the performance of the toys during their foreseeable use
  • Find compliant solutions to any problem detected during the testing stage
