FOSp represents the fermentable part of organic matter that is available for rumen fermentation. This fraction plays an important role in the fermentation process in the rumen.
A higher proportion of fermentable organic matter supports rumen fermentation, while differences in feed composition influence how much organic matter is fermented in the rumen.
The FOSp value depends on feed composition. Feeds that contain higher levels of sugars and soluble carbohydrates generally show a higher proportion of fermentable organic matter.
