Bisphenol A – New UHPLC-MS/ MS method with ultra-low LOQ

Bisphenol A (BPA) is used as a monomer in the manufacture of polycarbonates and epoxy resins and as an additive in plastics. Polycarbonates are used in food contact materials such as reusable beverage bottles, baby bottles and tableware. Epoxy resins are used in protective linings for food and beverage cans and vats.

Small amounts of bisphenol A may migrate into food. Bisphenols exhibit endocrine (hormone-like) properties and may have adverse effects on several organs.

In its Draft Scientific Opinion published earlier this year, EFSA recommends to lower the tolerable daily intake (TDI) from its current level of 50 µg/kg bw/day to 5 µg/kg bw/day. While the use of bisphenol A in food contact material is permitted under Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 with a specific migration limit (SML) of 600 µg/ kg, the use is prohibited for the manufacture of polycarbonate baby bottles (Directive 2011/8/EU).

Eurofins now offers the analysis of bisphenol A and F using an innovative UHPLC-MS/MS technique with an extremely low LOQ of 1 µg/kg for bisphenol A.
