EU issues a new regulation on the maximum residue levels of pesticides

September 8, 2008

On September 1, 2008 a new regulation setting out maximum residue levels (MRL's) of pesticides became effective in the EU and will replace several existing national legal provisions as well as 4 former European directives (the oldest one was issued in 1976). Compared to the previously-applied EU directives this new regulation defines maximum residue levels of some pesticides more restrictively. Moreover the number of pesticides now provided with MRL values has increased significantly. Although the new regulation aims to provide simplification by standardising existing EU and national regulations, at this stage some points still need to be further clarified. For example, compounds other than those defined as pesticides according to EU law, such as the synergist piperonyl butoxide, are not included in the new regulation.

Eurofins offers the newest analytical methods and relevant, professional consulting, thereby supporting the producers, traders, retailers and institutions who form its customer base. In addition to generally applied multi-methods, Eurofins offers other assays in order to detect further compounds, such as phenyl urea compounds, carboxylic acids and organic zinc compounds, which are either not detected or only partially detected by ordinary analysis. In total, Eurofins' range of analysis consists of more than 700 different compounds. By providing advice as well as high-technology analytical methods, Eurofins helps its customers to offer their products to the market according to the new EU regulations.

Eurofins is the market leader with respect both to supplying analytic methods and providing expertise in pesticide detection. With more than four decades of experience it offers its customers, without compare, the broadest range of testing assays for pesticide residues. More than 150 staff members at Eurofins Dr. Specht Laboratories alone, the Group's pesticide testing Competence Centre, are providing product safety and consumer protection services, using 70 state-of-the-art instruments such as GC-MS/MS, GC-MS and LC-MS/MS. Its worldwide market-leading position enables Eurofins to carry out pesticide testing for customers throughout the rest of Europe, the USA and Brazil and the Group is currently establishing a pesticide testing unit in China.
