IUCN Coral Specialist Group/CORDIO - The Red List of Corals

The IUCN Coral Specialist Group was established in 2009 when the first Red List of Species of reef corals was published. The Group is responsible for the maintenance of the list which identifies trends in the overall extinction risk of reef coral species.

The Specialist Group is supported by Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO), which was established in 1999 in response to the El-Niño-related mass bleaching and mortality of corals in the Indian Ocean in 1998. It is a non-profit research organisation, registered in Kenya, with a network of projects, collaborators and partners that extends across the Indian Ocean.

In 2020, the IUCN Coral Specialist Group has been nominated as a Top 15 Coral Reef Research Contributor by Eco Magazine for its work on the Red List of Coral project.

Given the importance of corals in both biodiversity and socio-economic terms, their high vulnerability to local and climate impacts, and their importance within IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) commitments, Eurofins Foundation is providing funding to CORDIO to complete a re-assessment of their status, to be completed in 2020.
