New MERCOSUR’s Resolution for labeling of textile products

 

On 16th December 2018, MERCOSUR approved Resolution No. 62/18 Technical Regulation on the labeling of textile products. The MERCOSUR member countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) must incorporate this resolution into their own legislation before 15th June 2019.

 

Some relevant points in the Resolution (non-exhaustive):

 

  • Mandatory labeling information:
    • Name or business name or trademark
    • Country of origin: Preceded by "Hecho en" (Made in) or "Fabricado en" (Manufactured in) or “Industria” (Industry) followed by the name of the country of origin
    • Name of textile fibers or filaments (percentage by mass)
    • Care instructions (according to NM ISO 3758:2013 in symbols or texts or both in the following order: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care)
    • Size or dimension
  • Other relevant points in Chapter VI of the resolution regarding labelling information:
    • The mandatory information must appear on the textile product in a permanent, legible and visible way through labels, stamps, labels, stickers, stamps, stamps or similar
    • The language must be that of the country of consumption, without prejudice that other languages may also be used
    • The typographical characters used in the mandatory information must not be less than 2 mm
    • Two or more textile products that have the same information and are a unit of sale, may indicate mandatory information in one of them
  • Exemptions:
    • When a packaging contains more than one unit, the number of units and the impossibility of being sold separately must be clearly indicated
    • When the packaging does not allow to display all the mandatory information, the packaging must indicate, at least, the textile composition, the country of origin and the size or dimension
  • Annex A: Designation and Description of Textile Fibers and Textile filaments
  • Annex B: Products that are not Subject to Compliance with the Regulation
