Amendment of Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on food contact plastic materials

 

On 11th January 2019 the European Commission published:

 

 COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) 2019/37 of 10 January 2019 amending and correcting Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

New update of Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHCs)

 

On 15th January 2019, the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) has released the new Candidate List of SVHCs. With the addition of 6 new substances, the current list of SVHCs contains 197 substances.

Argentina

 

Proposal of sanitary authorization of packaging and food utensils

 

On 18th December 2018, the National Food Commission CONAL (Comisión Nacional de Alimentos) notified to World Trade Organization (WTO) their Draft joint resolution incorporating an article on the sanitary authorization of packaging and food utensils that come into contact with foodstuffs into Chapter XXI, "Procedures", of the Argentine Food Code (CAA)).

 

The aim of this text is to harmonize administrative and sanitary requirements for the of packaging and food utensils that come into contact with foodstuffs.

India

 

FSSAI’s new packaging regulations

 

On 3rd January 2019, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notified the new packaging regulations which “replace all provisions with regard to packaging requirements prescribed in the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011.”

 

Within others, these regulations prohibit packaging material made of recycled plastics. Furthermore, being aware of the carcinogenic effect of inks and dyes, these regulations also prohibit the use of newspaper and such other materials for packing or wrapping of food articles and includes respective Indian standard for printing inks for use on food packages.

 

These regulations will come into force by 1st July, 2019.
