REACH Regulation (EC)1907/2006: New limits for PAHs planned

In June 2013 the REACH Committee discussed about an amendment of annex XVII (PAHs) to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. New limits were proposed concerning the following 8 polyaromatic cabon hydrates (PAHs) : Benzo[a]pyrene, Benzo[e]pyrene, Benzo[a]anthracene, Chrysene, Benzo[b]fluoranthen, Benzo[j] fluoranthene, Benzo[k]fluoranthene, and Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene. These new limits would implicate as follows: 1. Toys should not contain more than 0.5 mg/kg (0.00005 % by weight of a toy component) of any of the listed PAHs 2. Articles with either plastic or rubber components should not contain more than 1 mg/kg (0.0001 % by weight of a plastic or rubber component) of any of the listed PAHs The following listed articles contain either plastic or rubber components, which are inevitably exposed to skin contact, such as handles, grips, and handle bars: • Sport equipment such as bicycles, golf clubs, and racquets • House-hold utensils, trolleys, walking frames • Tools for domestic use • Clothing, footwear, gloves, and sportswear • Watch-straps, wrist-bands, masks, head-bands Of course we will keep you informed of any changes at the appropriate time.
