Green Star requirements on low VOC emissions regard

There can be granted 1 point for each of these categories.

Carpets and other floorings

Emissions of carpets and carpet underlays after 24 hours shall meet these requirements:

  • Total VOC less than 0.5 mg/m² per hour
  • 4-Phenylcyclohexene less than 0.05 mg/m² per hour

Testing: ASTM D5116

If no carpet is used then a point can be earned for this category if other flooring complies with the above limits.

Paints

Green Star has no VOC emissions limits for paints, only VOC content limits:

Different from SCQAMD: No subtraction of exempt VOCs, no subtraction of the water volume from the product volume.

Testing, if not just calculated - choice of standards:

  • GC in-can headspace, ISO 17895 for VOC content < 1%
  • GC after extraction, ISO 11890-2 for VOC content < 15%
  • Weight loss testing, ISO 11890-1 for VOC content > 15%, or
  • Weight loss testing, ASTM D3960 / ASTM D2369.

Adhesives and Sealants

Green Star has no VOC emissions limits for adhesives and sealants, only VOC content limits:
