Measurement of Sebum

Sidebar Image

A healthy skin is covered by a hydrolipidic film resulting from sebum secretion by sebaceous glands that are distributed all over the surface of the epidermis. An increase of sebum production results in a shiny and greasy skin.

Eurofins proposes two different methods to determine the secretion rate of cutaneous sebum by analysing the effects of cosmetic products such as seboregulation, matifying activity, etc.

Using a Sebumeter® we measure the cutaneous sebum secretion rate of volunteers and the potential improvement after applying a certain cosmetic product. This investigation is performed directly either on the skin or on the scalp.

In addition, we quantitatively as well as qualitatively determine sebum from skin using the device Sebufix®. This method is based on the application of a sticky patch which captures sebum in contact with skin, thereby providing an exact measurement of its production and distribution.

Further, we take either full frontal positions or sideway headshots in a standardised and reproducible manner using the photo station VISIA-CR®. With different types of light (standardised, cross polarised, parallel polarised as well as UV), this facial photostation enables us to visualise and measure different skin parameters such as counting of blackheads (porphyrins), shine of the skin, etc.

  • Seboregulation, anti-sebum effect
  • Matifying effect, reduction in cutaneous shining
  • Anti-greasy hair roots as well as anti-dry hair tips
  • Anti-dandruff

  • pH-meter
  • Self-evaluation
  • Dermatological evaluation
  • Image analysis: high resolution pictures taken with either non-polarised or crossed light
