A beautiful and healthy skin is above all synonymous with a well-hydrated skin. The measurement of the cutaneous hydration is an impartial method in order to evaluate the efficacy of your cosmetic products.

The testing portfolio of Eurofins consists of several methods to measure and to characterise the skin's moisture level as well as to investigate the status of the skin's natural protective barrier, the hydrolipidic film.

In order to determine the skin's moisture level, measurement of capacitance is carried out using a Corneometry. Thereby, we investigate the upper layers of the epidermis (stratum corneum).

To maintain a soft and well hydrated skin that is free of squam, an intact barrier function is essential. Measurement of Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is a reliable method to quantify the damage of the cutaneous barrier which very often is the origin of dry skin.

In contrast, measurement of desquamation is an indirect method to determine the skin's level of moisture. Thereby, the status of the hydrolipidic film, specially the level of hydration of the epidermis, is investigated. This method is based on counting and characterisation of corneocytes (dead cells) that are taken from the skin after application of a sticky patch (Corneofix).
