Eurofins offers the analysis of toxic natural compounds.
What are furocoumarines?
Furocoumarins are naturally occurring plant compounds. As such, they can also be found in essential oils which are added to cosmetic products.
Complexity of problems
When skin is exposed to the sun, furocoumarines can cause irritation with symptoms similar to burns, as well as allergies; cytotoxic and mutagenic effects are also reported in the literature concerning a few furocoumarines.
Thus, cosmetic products containing furocoumarines might pose a problem for the consumer.
As a result of the increasing demands of producers and of the retail market, Eurofins Consumer Product Testing GmbH, Hamburg, has established a method for the determination of 16 furocoumarines in cosmetic products and essential oils.
The test is based upon state-of-the-art analysis methods: LC-MS/-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry).
Please quote the following test codes when placing your order:
- JJ0BE for furocoumarines in cosmetics to a detection limit of 25 μg/kg
JJ0BI for furocoumarines in essential oils to a detection limit of 2.5 mg/kg
The determination covers the following three furocoumarines which are explicitly listed in the cosmetics directive 76/768/EEC:
- Trioxysalenum (trioxalen)
- 8-Methoxypsoralen (methoxsalen, xanthotoxin)
- 5-methoxypsoralen (bergapten)
In addition, our test includes the six marker substances given by IFRA (International Fragrance Association):
Our test also analyses eight further furocoumarines:
- Herniarin (7-methoxycoumarin)
