Therefore, ecotoxicological studies are required to prove that there are no unacceptable risks to the environment. Eurofins Agroscience Services offers a wide range of higher TIER studies. These ecotoxicological field studies are an important tool to evaluate possible impacts of the plant protection products in a natural environment. The studies are conducted with non-vertebrates and wild life - non-vertebrates tested are mainly non-target arthropods that represent no threat to a particular crop.

This group is very diverse and the members play an essential role in ecosystems as pest controllers (predators), pollinators, detrivores and saprophages. The field studies are conducted with species occurring naturally at the field site. The focus of these studies can be either on a selected group or on the community.

Eurofins Agrosience Services has experience with the conduct of those studies in Northern, Central and Southern Europe. Because of our experience we are and have been involved in guidance document development (i.e. EPFES, PERAS, ESCORT 2 and 3).

Predatory mite studies in orchards and vineyards

Highly standardized field studies for a selected group are predatory mite trials in orchards and vineyards. They are used to evaluate short- and long-term effects of plant protection products on population dynamics of predatory mites.

The studies are performed according to the recent guidelines in Germany, Spain, France, Greece and Italy. Mite identification is done in house.

Large scale non-target arthropod field studies (NTA)

Scientists at Eurofins Agroscience Services have performed large field studies in orchards and on arable crops since 1999 in Northern and Southern Europe. Experience enables our team to adapt designs of trials specific to your requirements.

Good contacts and participation in international working groups (ESCORT 3) guarantee that all trials are carried out according to the latest guidelines (Candolfi et al. 2000, de Jong et al. 2010).

Residue studies for risk assessment for birds and mammals

The SANCO guideline (4145/2000) is now replaced by the guidance document of EFSA (Risk assessment for Birds and Mammals, December 2009) used to calculate residue levels and exposure in food items for birds and mammals. We can perform arthropod and plant residue studies to support the registration of plant protection products. Studies should be performed in the relevant crop. For orchards and arable crops, a 3 ha size is needed for the studies.

Determination services

The determination of the specimens is a very important part of a study. The determination work should be performed as fast as possible to present the results of the study before the next season starts. The identification should be done to the lowest taxonomical level possible, without extensive preparation of the specimen. In house we can identify: mites (acariformes), collembolans, worms (annelids) and mice.

For the identification of arthropods caught in large field studies the work is done with co-operators outside Eurofins Agroscience Services but covered by our GLP certification.
