Dermal Absorption
Eurofins Agroscience Services offers a broad spectrum of analytical services needed for the registration of agrochemicals and biocides
Skin absorption; a route by which substances can enter the body through the skin, is a route of exposure for toxic substances into the human body.
Absorption of substances through the skin depends on a number of factors, the most important of which are concentration, duration of contact, solubility, physical condition of the skin and part of the body exposed.
As exposure to many chemicals occurs mainly via contact with the skin, knowledge of this penetration is required by the authorities and is essential to assess the operator exposure. Eurofins Agroscience Services offer dermal absorption studies which are mandatory to assess levels of operator exposure to potentially toxic substances.
Identification of absorption and/or metabolisation processes after topical application onto the skin can be conducted either with:
- In vitro models such as Franz cells (on animal and human skin)

- Clinical studies on animals or humans using radiolabelled or non radiolabelled material
- Occlusive or non occlusive system
Agrochemical products to be tested include new registered pesticides and formulations with concentrations to be tested either commercial formulation or field application dilution.
From a regulatory perspective, in vitro studies are in accordance with OECD 428 guidelines and in vivo studies are conducted in accordance with OECD 427 guidelines and / or with EPA OPPTS 870.7600
