Terrestrial Ecotoxicology Laboratory

Eurofins Agroscience Services offers a wide range of standardized TIER I laboratory studies as well as more complex higher tier studies under extended laboratory, semi-field and field conditions with standard or special designs

All studies are planned and performed by a highly experienced team of scientists and technical personnel according to the recent guidelines (IOBC, OECD, ISO, EPA) and guidance documents. 

Honey bees and bumble bees

The toxic effects of plant protection products on adult bees (Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris, Osmia bicornis) and honey bee larvae are examined in different kinds of studies following current OECD and EPA guidelines and guidance documents.

Honey bee studies can be conducted throughout the whole year (April to September in Germany and the USA, October to March in Spain); non-GLP screening tests are also available.  We are involved in the ring test groups for the development of the 10-day honey bee chronic feeding test, the honey bee larvae test (8-day and 22-days), the bumble bee and the Osmia acute test.

Non-Target arthropods on plants

We perform basic and extended testing on parasitoids (Aphidius rhopalosiphi, Trichogramma cacoeciae), predatory mites (Typhlodromus pyri), aphidophagous predators (Chrysoperla carnea, Coccinella septempunctata) and anthocorid bugs (Orius laevigatus).Test designs can be adapted to your needs with respect to the product or application technique.

Extended studies are either based on the classical laboratory or the aged residues design. In aged residue studies the persistence of an agrochemical is assessed for the specimens.  All tests are performed in our headquarters in Germany following the IOBC/WPRS guidelines.

Non-Target soil organisms

Eurofins Agroscience Services GmbH has more than 15 years experience in laboratory testing of ecotoxicological effects on soil organisms.

As a standard test, we conduct the soil microflora test throughout the year using natural soil.  This test includes the short-term respiration and the nitrogen transformation test.

Our stock cultures of Eisenia fetida, Folsomia candida (springtails) and Hypoaspis aculeifer (predatory mites) provides test organisms to perform acute toxicity studies, reproduction toxicity studies with this organisms all the year round. Bioaccumulation studies with earthworms can also be offered.

Furthermore we offer studies, and/or screening tests with several soil inhabiting arthropod species like carabid beetles (Poecilus cupreus, adults and larvae), staphylinid beetles (Aleochara bilineata) and lycosid spiders (Pardosa sp. Tests follow the recent OECD, ISO and IOBC/WPRS guidelines.

Non-Target terrestrial plants

We perform tests on seedling emergence and seedling early growth, observing the germination and growth of plant seeds or to evaluate the potential effects on the above-ground portions of plants. Additionally, we can conduct tests using treated soil which are designed to determine the inhibition of growth and reproductive capability of higher plants according to ISO 22030. In accordance with OECD or OCSPP Guidelines, tests are performed under defined conditions in a greenhouse; these studies can be conducted all year round.

Non-Target dung organisms

We offer studies for testing chemicals intended for veterinary use with the dung flies Musca autumnalis and Scatophaga stercoraria as well as the dung beetles Onthophagus taurus and Aphodius constans. We are involved in the ring test group for dung beetles (Onthophagus taurus). Our well established culture of Onthophagus taurus is one of only a few, or possibly the only example in the world.

Special Skills

  • High potential to develop and adapt test designs to special requests
  • Studies with aged residues are designed to assess PPP persistence under outdoor climatic conditions. Leaves for exposure are taken from field crops or from potted plants sprayed outside, simulating a field application.
  • Testing of coated seed or metabolites in laboratory and higher tier studies with soil inhabiting arthropods
  • Adapted Tier I design for non-GLP screening-tests with Folsomia candida, Hypoaspis aculeifer, Typhldoromus pyri, Aphidius rhopalosiphi, Apis mellifera and Bombus terrestris
  • Bee larval test over 22 days
  • Acute oral and contact toxicity and chronic feeding tests with Apis mellifera in laboratory in autumn and winter in Spain
